MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE – COOK COUNTY CASE #ME-2022-1027 DATE: August 5, 2022 PATHOLOGIST: Dr. Miranda Blythe SUBJECT: John “Jack” Kessler CAUSE OF DEATH: Exsanguination secondary to severed femoral artery MANNER: Homicide (suspected trap mechanism) SUMMARY: The victim’s body was recovered from an abandoned warehouse near the Chicago River. Evidence suggests the presence of a mechanized device rigged to release a spring-loaded blade when a door handle was turned. The victim triggered the device upon entry. The complexity of the contraption indicates advanced mechanical engineering knowledge. Despite parallels to the known modus operandi of the “Jigsaw” killer(s), no direct link has been established. However, the device’s design includes: - A timed fuse system reminiscent of older “booby trap” cases from the 1990s. - Soldering marks consistent with a custom build, possibly an underground workshop. Conclusions: 1. The contraption was intentionally designed to cause lethal harm. 2. No identification or calling card was found on-scene, but the sophistication suggests a suspect with a high level of mechanical aptitude. 3. Further investigation recommended to determine potential connection to Kevin McAllister, currently under suspicion in multiple “trap-related” cases.
